The recent evolution of the Dooshbag [darned filters]I'm Better Than Everyone Else niche market:
*Prius -- "Look at me, *my car runs on batteries, so I'm saving the planet and you're not!" *SmartCar -- "Look at me, *my car is saving the planet and I can store it in the sock drawer! Plus it's smart, so I must be smart, too!" This follows the traditional D/IBTEE line of cars (Porches, BMW convertibles, etc.) that said, "Look at me, I'm so stylish and hip, and I hope you don't notice that my penis is very small." The SmartCar is the "OH YEAH?" card of the deck that says, "Not only am I more hip and sensitive than you, my small penis is unicircumsized!" Give it a few years, and in the traidition of the Prius Elitists, you'll have the SmartElitists: "Yeah, mine was imported, too. I got it because I really care. The company has sold out, man, and now they'll let anyone buy one. It used to be just a few of us who owned these, and we bought them as a statement to our commitment to saving the planet. These days, I see people driving them and it makes me mad. A guy pulls up next to me in a SmartCar at a stop light, and I look over at him and --I can just *tell, man, from looking at him-- he probably can't quote any lines from An Inconvenient Truth. Probably hasn't even seen the movie. And if he did, he probably rented it for a dollar from the machine outside McDonald's. I saw it at the theater on its first run. These people just TOTALLY don't get it. They just see it as a cute car that gets good gas mileage and don't even care that it's more than a car, it's an ecological statement." |

The only one I have seen was on the interstate in MN doing about 55 in a 70 and hanging on for dear life. Little wind and the trucks. He, I think it was a he,
needed two lanes to keep it in the traveled portion of the roadway. The look on his face was precious.

The only one I've seen was in Russellville. The broad who drove it looked about as pretentious as humanly possible, or on the board of an HOA. Six of one,
a half-dozen of the other

I saw one last week with a blue hair and snow peak driving with Florida plates. It was cute as a button, but still not practical for a packrat like me.
After a little research 32 mph with only a 10 gallon tank and only a two seater, I'd rather still have a slightly used Mini Cooper at a reasonable price. My SUV is a gas hog V8 in need of a tune up, but for now, I'll stick to my paid off SUV and bologna sandwiches for lunch.
PS I like the specs on the smart car, the passenger seat is set back 6 inches so you don't rub elbows with the driver. The tranny review was pitiful and the car is not meant for 80 mph trips, so I guess the guy on the interstate was pushing his luck and praying.

A guest from Ontario drove a SmartCar, stopping in BG for the night on the way to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He said the ride was a bit stiff - what car wouldn't
ride stiff with that short of a wheel base. He acknowledges it wasn't meant for interstate travel. And he said this was the car he was going to drive from
here on between Canada and Florida from here on.
