From Wednesday's BGDN Letters:
In Monday's paper the Daily News reported that U.S. Bank would be making payments in the amount of $175,000 to help build the "Heritage Trail," a sidewalk toward the Barren River. Some folks donate tens of thousands of dollars to causes that they deem worthy, others complain about it as they dig for change in the couch cushions so they can get another bag of pork rinds.
In another issue on May 13, David Garvin gave $20,000 worth of tickets to children for the Hot Rods baseball team. Let me say first that any time someone donates money to any worthy cause that is a good thing; however, I wonder how $195,000 could have found its way to a better cause. Here in Bowling Green there are so many stomachs that are hungry, so many sick bodies that need medicine. These are not strangers, but our neighbors.
With all the recent shutdowns and closing of industries and loss of jobs, the needs of our city are great. I know you may not share my beliefs, but I always believe that the needs of our neighbors are much greater than a sidewalk or a two-hour ballgame.
