Posts: 5081 07/01/09 12:47 PM	Tags : None What 'cap and trade' will mean to you and I. http://www.kentuckyliving...eid=2605&issueid=326 What candidate Obama told a San Francisco audience in 2008: When I was asked earlier about the issue of coal…under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket…even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad, because I'm capping greenhouse gasses, coal power plants, natural gas…you name it…whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, they would have to retro-fit their operations. Wasn't it Owen who bragged he was paying a premium on his electric bill to get some "green" power? I thought that was hilarious, him paying extra and still getting the same amount of power.

Posts: 5081 07/01/09 8:34 PM	If that 'cap and trade' legislation is passed and signed into law it could very well devastate middle America for a couple of years until Congress is replaced and the law changed. One of the things that almost everyone who has looked agrees that electricity rates will skyrocket and there may even be periods of rolling brownouts like we saw in California a few years ago. A majority of the generating capacity is with fossil fuel, mainly coal, powered plants.

But.... try it for a month. You will be SHOCKED how much money you'll save on your electric bill.... Unplug EVERYTHING when you are not using it. And I mean everything (except refrigerators and alarm clocks). Unplug your tv, lamps, microwaves, computers (that's a HUGE one). Literally, anything and everything you can. Me and my husband saved over $50 our first month and we've gotten it over a hundred! You don't realize how many little things, most that you rarely use, are plugged in ALL the time sucking juice.... costing you money. Hey, every little bit helps. I suppose there just went my "rich" republican status, hu? lol

While many of the things you identify have a 'standby mode' or a constant LED display and use some electricity, maybe even as much as you have calculated, but not everything has a 'standby mode or flashing LED'. I would defer to the electrician on the final answer but my understanding of the basic rule of electricity is if there is no current flow there is no usage. And for current to flow a circuit must be completed and just because something is plugged into an outlet does not mean the circuit is completed. For instance if you turn the computer off you accomplish the same function as unplugging it. And the same would be true for a lamp.

Posts: 2441 07/02/09 4:38 PM	Yeah, ya wanna know how much I know about electricity? Ya plug it in the socket and things work! MAGIC! lol Seriously though, I don't know WHY it works, but it does. We've saved a MINIMUM of $50 a month simply by unplugging things when we weren't using them.... we didn't stop using them when we normally do and we aren't the type to leave a computer on all the time. We generally ALREADY turn things off when we're done.... so how ELSE could you explain a 50-100 difference? That is the only factor that changed.... Believe me, I didn't think it would make much of a difference... but I saw it on Oprah and thought, it can't hurt to try for a month and see.... so I did, and saved $50 the first month! Maybe someone around here can explain to everyone else HOW this works.... me, I just know that it DOES.

I just thought I'd share how we've saved on our electric bill since we were talking about electricity rates sky rocketing. I suppose it's POSSIBLE we've unplugged things that don't matter... but I still swear it works! It was kinda like a science experiment at first. But I won't lie to ya, it was really frusterating at first. Sitting down and eeaching for the remote and, crap! The tv's not plugged in! LOL But you get use to it. It feels good knowing we are saving money and I also feel like I am helping the enviroment. Both good lessons to pass along to my munchkin.
